Sea level rise has moved from a theoretical concern to a global crisis affecting lives, livelihoods and land. The World Economic Forum notes that rising sea levels caused by climate change now impact about 1 billion people worldwide. The phenomenon occurs because glaciers and ice sheets melt and warmer seawater expands, elevating the average height of the ocean’s surface. In 2024, scientists expected a global sea‑level rise of 0.43 centimetres, but NASA-led analysis observed an actual rise of 0.59 cm. Sea levels have already risen by more than 10 cm between 1993 and 2024. For low‑lying islands like Tuvalu and Kiribati, NASA predicts they will experience an additional 15 cm of sea‑level rise in the next three decades, even if greenhouse‑gas emissions are brought under control. The UN calls sea‑level rise “a global crisis” and ranks it among the top risks in its 2025 Global Risks Report.
The impacts are multifaceted. Higher seas allow storm surges to travel further inland, destroying homes and infrastructure and contaminating freshwater supplies. The Greenland ice sheet alone is losing around nine billion litres of ice per hour, raising concerns that melt rates could accelerate. Entire regions may become uninhabitable; in Bangladesh, researchers estimate that 3.5 million people are already at risk of river flooding each year due to sea‑level rise and intense monsoons, and the UN predicts that around 17 % of the country’s land could be submerged, potentially displacing tens of millions of people. Coastal megacities such as Shanghai, Mumbai and New York face similar threats, with billions of dollars of infrastructure at risk.
Mitigating and adapting to sea‑level rise requires urgent action on multiple fronts. Cutting greenhouse‑gas emissions is essential to slow ice‑sheet melt and thermal expansion. At the same time, governments must invest in coastal defenses like sea walls, restored mangroves and wetlands that act as natural buffers. Managed retreat—relocating communities away from eroding coasts—will be necessary in some areas. Accurate monitoring via satellite and tide gauges helps authorities prepare; scientists now use radar measurements to track global sea‑level changes and detect “fingerprints” that reveal melting patterns. International cooperation is also critical, as small island states lack the resources to implement large‑scale adaptation alone. Ultimately, sea‑level rise underscores the urgency of addressing climate change—not just for future generations, but for the billions already living on the world’s coasts.
