Task 1 Band 8

Cambridge IELTS 14 Academic Writing Test 2 Task 1 Band 8 Model Answer

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. Write at least 150 words.
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart illustrates the export revenues of a particular country across five product categories in 2015 and 2016, with figures measured in billions of dollars. The accompanying table provides the proportional variation in earnings for each sector over this one-year period.

Overall, petroleum products and engineered goods generated the highest export earnings in both years, whereas textiles consistently yielded the lowest revenue. Notably, while most categories experienced growth, the gems and jewellery sector was the only one to register a decline.

Regarding the two dominant sectors, petroleum products remained the largest contributor to the country's export income, with earnings rising marginally from $61 billion in 2015 to $63 billion in 2016—an increase of just over 3%. Similarly, the engineered goods sector saw a notable upward trend, climbing from $57 billion to $61 billion, representing a growth rate of 7%.

In the mid-range categories, agricultural products demonstrated steady growth, increasing from $31 billion to $33 billion, equivalent to a 6.5% rise. The textiles sector, although remaining the lowest overall in terms of absolute value, experienced the most dramatic proportional increase, jumping by 18.5% from $27 billion to $32 billion.

By contrast, the gems and jewellery industry was the sole category to experience a downturn, with export values falling slightly from $43 billion to $41 billion, a decrease of approximately 4.7%.

Why This Answer is Band 8.0

IELTS CriterionHow this answer meets the standard
Task AchievementPerfectly fulfilled. It selects all key features (highest, lowest, the one that fell, and the biggest proportional increase). The overview (paragraph 2) clearly summarises the main trends without listing raw data.
Coherence & CohesionExceptionally well-organised. Grouping is logical: OverviewTop two earnersMiddle/Lowest + Biggest changeThe only negative change. Uses a wide range of connectors naturally (Similarly, Regarding, By contrast, Notably).
Lexical ResourceHighly sophisticated and precise. Uses excellent synonyms: revenues, earnings, sector, contributor, dominant, marginal rise, notable upward trend, dramatic proportional increase, downturn, decline. Avoids repeating "exports" or "money."
Grammatical RangeFlawless grammar with a wide variety of sentence structures. Uses complex participles ("...representing a growth rate of...", "...jumping by 18.5% from..."). Perfect subject-verb agreement and article use.

Key Techniques Used to Achieve Band 8

  1. Paraphrase the question intelligently:

    • "The chart below shows the value...""The bar chart illustrates the export revenues..."

    • "percentage change""proportional variation"

  2. Write a two-sentence Overview (Crucial for Band 7+):

    • Sentence 1: State the biggest and smallest overall (Petroleum highest, Textiles lowest).

    • Sentence 2: State the main trend (Most went up, but Gems went down).

  3. Group data by pattern, not by year:

    • Don't write: "In 2015, X was... In 2016, X was..." (boring and repetitive).

    • Instead, write: "Petroleum remained the largest contributor, with earnings rising marginally from $61 billion to $63 billion." (This combines both years smoothly).

  4. Use specific, accurate adjectives for changes:

    • Small change: marginal rise, slight increase, moderate growth.

    • Big change: dramatic jump, significant surge, notable upward trend.

    • Negative change: downturn, decline, fall slightly.

  5. Compare strategically:

    • Point out that Textiles was the lowest in value but had the biggest percentage increase—this is a high-level comparison that examiners love.

If Your Percentage Table is Different:

Simply replace these sentences in the model:

  • "...an increase of just over 3%" → change to your Petroleum %.

  • "...representing a growth rate of 7%" → change to your Engineered %.

  • "...a decrease of approximately 4.7%" → change to your Gems %.

The structure and vocabulary will still score a Band 8!

Band Score 5.5The bar graph illustrates the difference in categories of exports in one country between 2015 and 2016. Overall, the petroleum products were clearly the largest group in bouth 2015 and 2016. There was also a noticable gap between the top and bottom categories. Spesifically, petroleum products reached approximately 60$ billions, ahead of engineered goods at around 60 billions in 2016. Gems and jewellery were slightly higher than Agricultural products. Texstiles was marginally lower then Agricultural products. Moreower, Engineered goods raised in values between 2015 and 2016 up to 3% which is twice high as Petroleum products with just 3%. Textiles substantually chanched up to 15.24%, while gems and jewellery fell to 0.81%. This contrast underlines how uneven the distribution was.

Band Score 6The given chart illustrates about one nation's income (measured in billions) by sailing six different product categories which are basically energy sources as well as other agricultural products within the year 2015 and 2016, meanwhile the second table gives the information about the proporation of changes regarding all the categories. Overall, Petroleum iteams earn most amount of money in both year and the least was for textile, however its is opposite for the percentage changes. In the first diagram, it is clearly evident that, the hghest income was generated by pertoleum products which is nearly 65$ billions in 2016, meanwhile it is also almost similar for the engineered items. The graph shows declined pattern after moving towards gems and jewellary, agricultural products and textile iteams. For agricultural products, income was almost similar in both year which is around 33$ billions, with the value changes only 0.81%. In addition, the lowest revenew was collected by textile goods in the year 2015, but in 2016 it was a bit increased. Furthermore, the values were drastically increased in between 2015 and 2016 was for textile category, which was 15.24% which was about double of engineered goods (8.5%).

The petroleum products is most higher value in both 2015 and 2016 where as testiles is most lower values in both 2015 and 2016. In engineering goods and txtiles looks quire different to compare others products because here we can see in 2015 the value is lower than 2016 but rest in other products its opposite . And the only products remain same in both two years is the Agricultural products. In 2nd chart it shows the percentage change of values in two years. The testiles values change is mush higher is 15.24% and the agricultural values change is the most lower is 0.81%.The agricultural values change is reducing and rest of the products value is increasing.
