Cambridge IELTS 18 Academic Writing Test 2 Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write at least 250 words.
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification.Discuss both these views and give your opinion.Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
The focus of university education is a subject of ongoing debate. While some students are keen to broaden their knowledge by exploring subjects outside their primary field of study, others argue that concentrating solely on their main qualification is the most effective path to success. This essay will discuss both perspectives before concluding that a balanced approach, with a primary focus on the major, is generally the most beneficial.

On one hand, the argument for a specialised focus is compelling. University courses are often intensive and demanding, requiring significant time and effort to master. By dedicating all their energy to one subject, students can achieve a deeper level of expertise, which is highly valued by employers in competitive fields. For instance, a medical student must absorb vast amounts of complex information to become a competent doctor; any time spent on an unrelated subject like art history could be seen as a distraction from their core, life-saving training. Furthermore, achieving top grades in their main subject can open doors to prestigious postgraduate opportunities and specific career paths.

On the other hand, there is a strong case for the value of a broader educational experience. In our rapidly changing world, interdisciplinary knowledge is becoming increasingly important. An engineering student who also takes courses in business management, for example, will be better equipped to lead a team or manage a project later in their career. Similarly, a computer science student with a background in psychology might be more adept at designing user-friendly software. Exploring other subjects can also help students discover new passions and develop critical soft skills like communication and problem-solving, which are essential for any profession.

In my opinion, while a student's major should remain their primary focus, a minor exploration of other subjects is highly advantageous. A complete diversion of attention could be detrimental, but a well-chosen elective or two can significantly enrich a student's education and future prospects. For example, a law student might benefit from studying philosophy to better understand ethics, or an economics student could gain valuable skills from a course in statistics.

In conclusion, the decision between specialisation and breadth is a significant one. While focusing entirely on a qualification provides deep expertise, incorporating other subjects offers a more versatile skill set. I believe the ideal approach for most university students is to prioritise their major while selectively exploring other areas of interest, thereby becoming both expert and adaptable.

Band Score 6.5There are differing points of view about whether university students should learn other subjects in addition to their main subjects or focus only on studying for a qualification. Although learning a lot of subjects at the same time will provide free time in the future, I still think that concentrating on one sphere is important because you will not struggle with concentration. University students who want to study other subjects along with their main subjects may be too afraid of lack of time. Take, for example. those who choose to study a number of subjects. They may want to get everything done in time, because they may fear that they will remain behind their peers and they think that in the future they will receive more free time. However, I do not think reloading yourself with a lot of subjects to study can help them to finish everything in time. It can force them to feel under pressure, which leads to gaining stress. Others, on the other hand, argue that it is more crucial to give all your time and attention to studying for a qualification because it is beneficial for your concentration skills. If a person focuses on one academic discipline and concentrates on improving it, that person will probably succeed in the other activities and finish everything without pressure and stress. I agree with that argument because, as discussed above,if a person is studing everything at once, they will be in academic stress. In conclusion, even though studying a lot of subjects at once can give you free time in the future, it will damage your mental health. Therefore, I believe that focusing on studying main subjects is a good thing when thinking about health and concentration skills.

Band Score 5.5There is dispute between two group of learners, whereas they should study extra subjects or just focus on their group subjects to get an academic certificate. While both views are worth mentioning, I believe that learning extra skills besides institutional subjects can be advantageous in the future. Students prioritise academic disciplines in order to gain high CGPA as it is valued in the job market. After completing graduation, many students want to be employed in corporate fields, which require maximum marks. As a result, many pupils concentrate on their own field. For example, the students of the Dhaka University are reported to be attentive in their class lectures , assigments and exam, directed by their teachers, because their goal is to get a good job. On the other hand, a number of young people are interested in obtaning knowledge out of the box, since only academic books alone cannot fulfil their thirst for wisdom. Additional subjects broaden their minds by giving information of various fields such as Literature, IT, Geography, and Arts. Even, there is a huge demand of creative individuals that only selected acadamic subjects cannot provide. Academic field prepares the students in certain aspects, while knowledge of other sectors can enrich someone's cognitive intellect. Therefore, acquiring proficiency on other subjects can lead a person to a greater success. In conclusion, although acadamic disciplines have positive consequences regarding employment under organisation, deep understanding of other fields beyond own field can surpass formal learning ,which ultimately should be the central concern to the students.

Band Score 5.5Some student of some universities are keen to learn about different subject other from their own main subject. Threr is a very strong belief that it is very important to give the time and attention that all u have to studing to ake the qualification more and more possible. I believe it is very important for us to just focus in our main subject to be more successful in life. Student study an extra subject because they want to gain knowledge about other side stuff as well to make them self wise from others. They also want to explore more and more opportunities by learning side skills and knowledge. As they are gonna have knowledge about multiple things then they are gonna be helped with in with diffenent skill work. So for young people they feel it is very important to learn extra skill and knowledge for the future. But learning extra skill and constantly focusing on them may have very negative effect as well. Like hard to focus in main subject, overwriting one knowledge to another, getting very less grades in main subject there are very common problem of doing these activities. As per my experience, for me focusing even in 1 subject is hard and focusing in multible will be impossible for me. As I have seen my friend reading 2 subject, they read subject very related to each other to get little bit more knowledge but reading different subject is very hard to crack as the study overlaps and exams can alow overlap and become hard. Overall reading studing an extra subject is very rarely possible as focus time and overlaping ideas comes to mind so a student should focus in only main subject and try to qualify from it

Band Score 6It is often argued that students want to learn different subjects along with their major subject, while some people say that they should focus only on the main subject rather than focusing on other subjects. Learning subjects from different areas helps students become more knowledgeable, so I strongly believe that learning from various areas in student life prepare themselves for the future. On the one hand, focusing on different subjects in students life help to build their cognitive abilities. Students who learn multiple subjects during their university years can gain creativity and critical thinking, which are highly valued skills in career life. Nowadays, universities offer different areas of subjects for their students. For instance, students who are majoring in Accounting and Finance, in addition to their major subjects, are allowed to take management or marketing courses. It is a matter of choice, so that students can have a chance to learn about those fields as well as their major courses. It enhances their knowledge about other fields along with their chosen majors. On the other hand, critics say that students should spend all their time and effort on a specific field where they want to develop their career. According to them, if students focus on multiple subjects, they might lose interest in their main goals, and it is just time-consuming. Where students who know multiple subject areas will have a broad career field. To give a specific example, students who have gained knowledge from different subjects can be good leaders in the future. For a CEO or CFO, these types of posts, people need to have knowledge from different subjects, not only from one specific area. In conclusion, although specialising in one particular subject helps to gain deep knowledge, I believe that processing a wider knowledge from different fields serves as the foundation for a more creative and fulfilled life.

Band Score 5.5many undergraduate educator prefers to study with full dedication and attention wherese others think that not only it is the main concern as well as many other subjects should be consider for qualification.from this two opinion i strongly beleive that study as well as other subjects make students more knowledgeble. in my first paragraph i want to say more knowledge creats more opportunity because university is that place where students get there best academic knowledge which led them to choose the right career thats why if he/she learn study as well as different subject it makes this more competitive,As for example dailystar showed in 2025 a publication that in 1990 people were so eager to achieve first in the exam and also that time there were no so much opportunity to expolre them thats why most student have two options whether they do job or businesS,but in 2026 ungrade students have lot of options as they gathered more knowlege they can earn more as they have lot of opportunities. In my second paragraph ,i want to say at todays word learning more is a big advantage. as for example ,2020 a news has publish indiviuals now migrate more than before, and why this happen at present country students look dream big they think themseves in a bg corporatelevl and aboroad thats why they not only acquire only their study knowledge as well as they learn different language for going abroad becase they know only studt knowlede can not reach them their final destination. As a result, dayby individuals are now encouraging to expolre hemselves by acquiring more knowledge In conclude this is the time for a university scholar to take challege to take risk and break the ceiling by taking more and more knowledge and it is only possiple to go beyond their comforzone ,so i beleve if any student read 4 hours .extra 2 hours should be his rountine which keep him successful in everystage study to success.

Band Score 5.5Many individuals would like to learn an extra subjects to their main subjects, while others argue that spending all their time for a subjects which are necessarry for their job qualification. That essay will disscuss about both opinions. On the one hand, some students believe that learning additional subject will be beneficial in the future because it will broaden your horizons and help in career. Gaining knowledge in different subjects, besides principal disciplines, will allow students to see a sitiation from different viewpoints. That skill is very useful in daily life and make people more appealing for companies as they highly value employees with an objective approach to work. For example, companies who develop state-of-the-art technologies ,such as Google or Nvidia, always compete with each other for a specialists who have deep knowledge in a numerous fields. On the other hand, some people are not agree with that approach, and they believe that students should focus only on their qualification. For them, Gaining deep knowledge only in subjects related with their job will have more positive influence on career opportunities than partially knowing numerous disciplines. Also, students already have very busy schedules, and having additional subjects to learn will bother an educational process in main subjects. For instance, many reasearch have shown that to become a master in one field people should spend all their free time in learning main subjects, while extra lessons will reduce overall productivity of study. In summary, there are a lot of students who want to have knowledge not only in their main disciplenes as it will allow them to see a single situation from different point of views and make objective decisions, whereas some individuals believe that an additional subjects will bother whole educational process, and it will be better to know only their principal subjects.

Band Score 5.5In contemporary era, students have right to study their subjects according to their preference. some people believe that it helps to broadens their education and skills while other think that they should pay attentions towards their major subjects rather than others. In this essay, I will discuss the both views along with my personal opinion. On the one hand, studying wider range of subjects give a opportunity to students to get more knowledge and information. For example, if a engineering student learns communication subject with his study , he can improve their abilities and ski;;s , which are highly valued by his empolyer in future. As a results, graduates become more adaptable in competitive job market. On the other hand, some individuals reveals that students must focus on their main subjects. The significant reason is that university study requires lots of hardwork and dedication. For example , if a medical student devote their mind into two diverse fields , he or she unable to get acheivable degree rewards which is not good for their future. In conclusion, I would like to say that both the approches have own benefits. However, I believe that foucsing major subjects are more important as compared to experience different subjects.

Band Score 6.5Many university students are in a dilemma about whether to prioritize their time and attention to intensify one subject for a qualification or to diversify their skills and knowledge by learning other subjects. This essay argue that learning additional knowledge and skillsets beside our main subjects is far more beneficial for the future. Most of students tend to believe that by mastering their subject in the university, the door to employment will be opened. Therefore, they spend most of their time and attention to learn solely about there main subjects. However, the facts in the work life are often different than what we thought during university. A huge amount of work force nowadays are being replaced by the technology of artificial intelligence. In addition, many experts have stated that this reality leads to higher competition in employment and higher qualification in job vacancy requirements with most of jobs require their employee to master a number of skillsets that comes from a wide range of subjects, especially for fresh-graduates. Learning more than just our main subjects is the main solution to enhance the possibility of getting a good job. With learning about other subjects, we are not just expanding our skillsets but also enriching the way of how we sees and solves problems. Furthermore, we are adding our capability in working with people from different mastery and mindset. With a wide range of skillsets and a interdisciplinary mindset, getting a decent job is just a matter of time for a fresh-graduate. Additionally, once we are admitted to our job we can start to consider about deepening or focusing our knowledge and skills into a certain subject. In conclusion, enriching our capability by knowledge diversification will be more impactful for our future than just learning solely about our main subjects. It will open doors to employment and decent pathway of career.

Band Score 6The issue of some university students interested in studying many additional subjects other than main subject has increasingly become serious in many parts of the world and is now considered a crucial perspective. However, some believe that it is more important to focus mainly on studying main subject and give all strength and attention to studying their main field of subject. Although, there are different arguments regarding this issue, I firmly believe that studying additional subjects along with main subject is largely beneficial. This is because it helps students to improve their overall knowledge regarding different areas of life while focusing on main subject equally. This essay will discuss both views and primary reasons for my point of view. On the one hand, students who only focused on main subjects may develop strong knowledge regarding particular area of study while developing crucial skills and efficient knowledge. However, this perspective will not give enough space for students to understand and experience of studies. This is because their critical thinking only will limited to one field of study and may not lead them to think out of box. As a result, these students will only get less experienced educational background, while others enjoy the best pursuits of learning new skills, languages and knowledge effectively. Therefore, learning additional subjects are vital and more effective in order to gain broad and widespread knowledge overall. For example, recent research from University of Sydney illustrates that students who studies multiple subjects in addition to their main subject are more tend to improve communication skills, self confidence, various languages, and social interactions. Moreover, these students are tend to manage difficult situations effectively compared to the other students. On the other hand, Students who focus different areas while studying main subject are able to gain self confidence, form effective relationships, develop healthy relationships and more keen to become a healthy adult. This is because, They experienced many theoretical and practical knowledge compared to other students who only limited their knowledge only for one area of study. For an instance, students who study about health, technology, environment, science and mathematics are far more useful for future compared to the students who only expert in one area of knowledge. In conclusion, although there are different argument regarding this issue, I firmly believe that learning additional subjects while studying main subject is crucial. This is because it can develop overall students knowledge regarding society, improve critical thinking, self confidence and become multitasking compared to those who only learn about one area of study.

Band Score 6Many students want to learn about additional subject along with the main subjects while some people think it is better to contribute their time and attention to studying to be qualified in main subjects. Although it seems that focusing on primary subject of course seems better option for a better grade but learning about boarder topics will allow students to be in advantage position during real life work since it requires practical knowledge that overlaps with different aspects of life. In the one hand, investing time and effort to study for a qualification will allow students to get better score in their academics. Must of the students are bound to get the desired score by performing well in their classes and exams, focusing on the fixed set of subjects. This will allow student to cover and practice the all necessary topics. They will have understanding of complex topics and will allow them to be good at what they do. Whereas this might cause tunnel vision problem to students where they only focus on one particular field and they ignore the outside perspective of the world and how to navigate in day to day life and other general skills like proper communication. In the other hand, investing time in additional subject will allow student to experience other experiences that will help them in their carrier in different ways. By involving in extra curricular activities student can be more open towards new concepts and critical thinking. When students engage with students and teacher in other streams it will allow them to think beyond their comfort zone and combine the knowledge of different field and create something new. For example, Steve Jobs was taking calligraphy along side his computer science degree, that made a huge impact when he later designed Mac operating system since it has very good font with industry leading designs. In conclusion, when students learn about additional subjects along with their main subjects it will help students in a positive way. It will allow student to explore various fields without leaving their main course and help develop skills and connections that are relevant in their personal and professional life.

Band Score 5.5There is an ongoing debate about whether students should learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects or give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Some students believe that they should learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects, others argue that it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. In my view, both views also have their own benefits. However, I agree with learning about other subjects in addition to my main subjects because it will brings many benefits for me in the future. Firstly, learning other subjects in addition to the main subjects is really useful for you in the future. This is because you will have more experiences when you try your best to study more than your main subjects. For instance, when university students learn more than their main subjects by extra subjects such as English courses, presentation skill courses or join a club to make new friends, they will improve their shortcoming and have more opportunities in the future. Furthermore, other subjects in addition to their main subjects also help you expand knowledge and build a useful network. Therefore, if you want your life in the future more easier, you must try your best to study all the things, which you believe it will essential. Secondly, giving all their time and attention to studying for a qualification is not bad, but it do not for university environment. This is because university environment is really enormous, it doesn't like high school so you can't only study your main subjects. For instance, if you only study your main subjects, but don't make new friends or learn other soft skills, you will loss many opportunities to improve yourself and shortcoming. My teacher said that: "Failure is the mother of success", this encouraged you to try more. Moreover, university environment is the time to expand a useful network. Therefore, you should manage time efficiently to studying for a qualification, and spend time to go to other extra courses.

Band Score 5.5Some collage students argue that to learn about other subjects in addition to their main one Others think that it is more important to give your full attention and you time to be able to sucseed. In my essay I discuss both of the views and give my opinion. On one hand, in todays global world every human being know about at least two or more subject. For example, even thoug childeren so small they started to learn coding or IA related to this more and more people become more skilled. As a result, I think that to be able to cope with them universty students need to learn more then one subjects at a same time. On the other hand, to study more than one subject at the same time student may become depressif or to luck of focus or stresed out. Fir instance, as I am the one who experienced university life altough studidied one subject gave me very stress and it was very difficult to get apporipiriet result from the exams i do not think about to study more than one subject. Consequently, I think that studied with more than one subject at a same time may turn into disousters related to this student think careffuly and than dicased to whatever they wanted. To sum up, I belive that studying more than one subject may be good if you are capeble of the stuations you are in but even thoug studying one subject diffucult enough some of the student can t be able to do two of them so I believe that it depends on the student itself.

Band Score 5.5It is often argued that learners in university should study more subjects than their main one, while others contend that it is more beneficial to give all their effort to studying for a main qualification. From my perspective, it is more important to focus on the main priority rather than a variety of fields all at once. Focusing on one main area in university helps students become more educated on the field they want to pursue in the future. Having to study and obtain a lot of information all at once can be frustrating to students. Consequently, they lose interest over time, which can negatively impact their desire to study, particularly for the degree they dreamt of. For instance, during my finals week I had a large number of assignments and projects to complete before a certain date, which not only increased my stress levels but also affected my productivity. Therefore, I did not give my best effort to the main priority, which was getting the highest grade possible on the exam. However, some students believe that additional subjects are crucial to build great minds and highly educated individuals. While this is not wrong, it is important to mention that universities can come up with an easy solution which can significantly help their students manage their workload and stress. One great example is to make specific clubs which students can attend freely based on their interests. For instance, the school that I am in, have recently made attending certain lectures optional. As a result, students are studying more effectively for their main priorities and they have more leisure time to enjoy themselves. While additional subjects are important, it is beneficial to let students decide whether they want to attend them or not, especially if this does not affect their future professional skills. In my opinion, this makes it easier for them to give their best for their main goals and it creates space for them to pursue other areas in their free time.

Band Score 5.5In recent years, more and more university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects, while others think that it is more essential to spent time on getting qualifications and I believe that learning a variety of subjects has a positive impact on students. There are two different views on the issue. One major benefit of spending time on main subjects is that learning main subjects for long time can contribute to deepening their knowledge. For instance, subjects such as english or economics require a huge amount of time to gain knowledge. That is why, many people think that focusing mainly on main subjects has positive impact on their future career. Furthermore, acquiring a wide range of knowledge of other subjects can get way of learning main subjects. This is because the amount of time they spent on one subjects may decrease. As a result students cannot learn these subjects effectively. On the other hand, there are also advantages of lacquering a wide range of knowledge. One major benefit of the trend is that a lot of companies today prone to focus on students that have a variety of experience and knowledge, playing a vital role in society. Therefore, it is also advantageous to acquire a lot of qualification. Moreover, it is more common to change their job and qualification can lead to having a positive effect on their career. In terms of chasing their job, many people consider that students should gain a wide range of qualification. In conclusion, although leading main subjects can contribute to playing a vital role in their future career, the benefits of studying a wide range of subjects outweigh them. For the de reasons stated above, I strongly believe that they need to focus on a wide range of subjects.

Band Score 6In our contemporary world nowadays, education and higher education in particular, is one of the most crucial but also problematic issues that humanity has to deal with. Many students believe that focusing on one subject is necessary, but there is another school of thought that learning more subjects besides the main one. This essay will discuss both views and give out the personal opinion. On the one hand, learning their major and other subjects can be a good way for student to develop themselves entirely, not only in their major but also in other aspects. On the account that the current job market is overcrowded these days, combing different subjects at the same time can help seeking out more opportunities and have more promotion in the future career. For instance, if a student is good at Math, then he chooses to study English as an extra subject, he can easily study abroad or become a teacher teaching integrated subjects. On the other hand, paying attention in the main subject and studying in can also be a good idea. Due to the demands of high-quality degrees, concentrating in a unique major is a good choice for students. They can try their best in the majors they have chosen, then get the qualifications as well. One case of point is that there are some famous high schools for the gifted, where students can focus on their majors, and the other subjects are often reduced to create less stress. To sum up, I am of the opinion that learning extra subjects in addition to the main one, but these views have both advantages and disadvantages to use and improve. Learning different subjects at the same time can help students evaluate and develop themselves entirely, whereas paying attention to the only one can be a good way to get a qualification.
