Task 2 Band 7

Cambridge IELTS 18 Academic Writing Test 1 Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write at least 250 words.
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
The fundamental purpose of scientific endeavour has been a topic of philosophical debate for centuries. While some argue that science should be a pure, unfettered pursuit of knowledge, the prevailing view is that its primary objective must be the betterment of humanity. I largely agree with this statement, as the most impactful scientific breakthroughs have directly addressed human needs, though I believe this should not entirely preclude research that is purely exploratory.

On one hand, the argument that science should serve humanity is compelling and historically well-founded. The most celebrated scientific achievements are those that have tangibly improved our quality of life. For instance, the development of vaccines and antibiotics has eradicated diseases that once decimated populations, dramatically increasing life expectancy. Similarly, advancements in agricultural science, such as the Green Revolution, have averted widespread famine by boosting crop yields. These examples demonstrate that science’s greatest value lies in its power to solve pressing problems, from healthcare to food security, making it an indispensable tool for societal progress.

However, it is also important to acknowledge the value of pure, curiosity-driven research. Many of the life-saving technologies we rely on today were born from discoveries that initially had no practical application. For example, the discovery of the structure of DNA was a fundamental scientific pursuit, yet it laid the groundwork for the entire field of genetic medicine. Similarly, research into quantum mechanics seemed abstract for decades but is now the foundation for modern computing and telecommunications. If we strictly limit science to immediate, practical outcomes, we risk stifling the very creativity that leads to revolutionary, long-term improvements to people's lives.

In conclusion, while I am a firm proponent of applying science to better human existence, I believe that a complete focus on applied science would be short-sighted. The most profound benefits often emerge from a blend of targeted research and unfettered exploration. Therefore, the primary aim of science should indeed be to improve lives, but this must be balanced with the freedom to pursue knowledge for its own sake, as this is often the seed from which future improvements grow.

Band Score 6In today's world, science has become a major topic of discussion. Many people believe that objective of science is to provide ease in people's lives, but in the long run the pace with which advancement is increasing, it may result in unhealthy consequences. In my opinion, the profileration of research and development in field of science should be supported under surveillance to bring best outcomes which can be helpful to people. The latest introduction of technological advancements such as medical, engineering and architecture are proof that science is making our life much more effortless. In recent time, the type of progress observed in medical field is remarkable. Hospitals are spending a lot of funds in research to develop automations for surgeries and diagnosis systems. For Instance, Robots are performing major surgeries like heart or brain operations have gained a lot of appreciation and funding, consequently this will lead to more proficient and precise operations without any mistake. The Engineering and Architectural fields are moving towards changing the way how world use to work before. The autonomus systems such as in emerging field of artifical intelligence has reduced manual intervention to large extent. It is assisting in reducing the repetitive tasks which used to take many hours of human's. For example, Open AI tools such as Chatgpt, Claude.ai, Perplexity are helping in generating automated mails using scheduled cloud flows which automate the task of manual mail sending. It is observed that over past few years, Science has played a huge role in making people's life uncomplicated. The redundant and repetitive tasks are reduced and streamlined with proper well defined systems in which there is no human interference. But it is important to understand at the same time that even science is being discovered by humans so the cognitive understanding's base is still man made and it can not be replaced.

Band Score 6.5In today's society, whether scientists should focus on discoveries to improve people's lives or other global issues is a topic of considerable debate. While paying attention to enhance people's quality of life can supply long-term benefits, concentrating on other global challenges can be also important for social stability. On the one hand, prioritizing individuals' life challenges can offer a safer society, and I firmly agree. By focusing on people's difficulties, scientists can easily analyze the main issues of the society and make new discoveries, which hopefully lead to an absence of a social problems, such as social unrest, economic instability, delinquency and so on. As a case in point, the integration of new security tools, such as facial recognition, enables law enforcement scan massive crowd and instantly check against a police database to identify criminals and hooligans. Therefore, implementing new innovations by scientific discoveries can bring long-term communal benefits. On the other hand, I believe that paying particular attention to other global issues is also plays a crucial role to increase global stability. Not only does the world consider a place for human existence, but it also home for many living beings, which are playing a vital role in global ecosystem. The impact of human activity can be severe for animals, especially for species which are already endangered by existential threats, such as food chain disruption, losing habitats, and poaching. In this case, prioritizing the prevention of animal extinction can be substantial for global biodiversity. Consequently, if scentists restricted their attention only to human requirements, animals would dwindle in numbers, subsequently undermine ecosystem sustainability. In conclusion, while concentrating on people's demand can bring long-term social benefits, drawing attention to other problems can be also grave for global stability. Ultimately, I believe that striking a balance between them can increase the world resilience.

Band Score 6The most significant goal of scicence is to enhance individual's lifestyle. From my perspective, this is a positive aspect and science should focus on people's life to make it easy in the long run. Since the development of science, it has been working to inventent new things to change our daily life. We always expect to bring a positive development in our society, which can be done with science ,because it has the power to create inovative products that give us ease in every sector. In this modern age, we need accurate solution to diseases, such as cancer, heart attack, and kidney failure, which can be cured with the help of science. Besides, science also can make progress in transportation system inventing new technologies to make it fast. Moreover, it can make education way better than before. With the help technology, educational institutions are using digital tools to teach the students, while coventional methods had limitations. So, if it is continued to develop , it will create much opportunities that will also create people's life easy. However, science also has focus on creating weapons that make a country much strong. But, this should not be the primary focus, because ammunition causes destruction rather than creation. The citizens always want to make their life hassle free in every part of their life. For example, healthcare, transportation, living, and so on. In conclusion, science has many objectives, but its main goal should be focusing on making people's life comfortable and give them release from complexity, that they are facing in their life.

Band Score 6While some believe that the most crucial aim of science ought to be to develop people's lives, others oppose this assertion. I contend that, not only can science improve our lives, but it can also feed our curiosities. Initially, science enhances our way of living. Throughout history, knowledge were used to make our lives easier and more comforting, and it still is. For instance, the development of tools helped the human-kind to manage various life aspects easily. Furthermore, without science and constant research, we wouldn't have crucial life necessities, such as, air conditionars -as we in the uae live in a hot and humid goegraphical area-, and communication devices. Additionally, science feeds our curiosities. Humans, in their nature, are curious creatures, as they posses high intellegence, allowing them to think creatively. Science and research helped them find answers. As a result, knowledge are acquired, allowing the human-kind to refine substantially. An illustration of that is astronomy and astrophysics. Which started by asking a question out of sheer curiosity, then developed to creating diverse technologies that allowed people to discover the outer-space even more. Some might contend that the most important goal of science nowadays is to abuse it to develop ceratin products in order to persuade people to buy it. While i partially agree with that, it's more logical to think brightly. With the improvement of other harmful products, other beneficial goods are also created and refined, maximising life expectancy. In conclusion, while the most important goal for science is to enhance our lives, other aims are also available.

Band Score 5.5Nowadays, growing population is a major concern because it requires a large area to build homes for population. However, if we build tall buildings, we will overcome from housing crises since tall buildings can provide houses for thousand of families; additionally, these houses would be cost effective and pocket friendly. As we know that growing population require space to live. If we cut down the trees and forest to clear space, so we will cause the loose of wildlife habitats, which allows them to come our homes because they do not have habitats to live in. Furthermore, building ordinary houses for population require large amount of fossil fuels because machines require fuel to run them. However, the amount of fuel used in order to construct tall building is consumed in lower quantity than ordinary homes. Therefore, reducing the amount of fossil fuel consumption is important because it is not reversable. However, the tall buildings have the falling chances because of earthquake. The government should monitor the construction companies and restrict them for using low quality concrete. Although, the companies focus on profit, they can use low quality materials so that government should take accountability of construction tall buildings otherwise, many people will loose their lives. It is assumed that Hong Kong population increased drastically so that the Hongkong government decided to build taller buildings in order to overcome the housing crises phase and they have overcome from that situation. In contrast, i strongly agree with this opinion that we should build the tall buildings to provide enough houses for population. However, the earthquake may be problematic for taller building but if we develop the tall buildings with high quality earthquake proof materials so we will not face any issue in the future.

Band Score 6It is widely recognized that the science has become a main topic in the modern world. It is often argued that its main goal is to in improve the lives of people. I completely agree with this opinion, because it has contributed not only to health sectors but also in transportation. On the one hand, science has significantly improved the healthcare. Previously there was no any vaccines and medicines to cure the disease, but now with the innovation it has made possible to cure most of the disease. As a result, people suffer from few diseases and live longer and healthier life. for example, the invention of police vaccines had protected the large number of people from polio diseases and eliminated the risk of having it many counties. Therefore, scientific development has improved the people's life expectancy and the quality of living. On the other hand, transportation is also one of the major inventions of science. It has made possible to travels long distance in few hours and efficient way. In the past years, people have to travel on foot for many miles in from one place to another place, but now with the beginning of cars, trains and buses they can travel fast. for example, people can travel from Chitwan to Kathmandu within few hours, which takes 2-3 days on foot, which saves lot a time that takes in journey. Consequently, it contributes to job opportunities so that people can travel to different cities for job. Therefore, Improved transportation creates better job opportunities and standard of living. In conclusion, I believe science main objective is to help people lives because if there were no scientific innovation, there would be poor quality of living, the human needs to struggle a lot, now it had made easy by the tecnology.

Band Score 5.5It is quite debatable whether in main focus of any kind of scientific development is the people's live improvement or not? I am totally agree with the concept that science's main purpose should be enhance the comfort of its consumer. In this essay I will provide sufficient reason for my agreement. Firstly, human being always think for their own betterment. Any kind of scientfic developent is ouccurs to full fill poeples comfort. For example, think about induction of computer, in was only to count maths easily.Though now days computer server many different purpose, its main to was to make poeple life easy . So, human convenience is ther first priority of sciticfic research. Then people work to fix any scientific erorrs which can be harmful to the human's betterment. Past few years back we all went through a pandemic which was a result of scientific research. After lossing more than thousand lives scientists were busy to search how can they save the remaining lives. As a result the covid vaccine has invented and saved people's live. Though debate exist about the motive of scientific innovation , i still believe it is the human's comfort or improvement is main focus for any development in science.

Band Score 6.5Science has played a crucial role in shaping the modern world, and many people believe that its primary purpose should be improving human life. I strongly agree with this statement because scientific progress has the power to enhance health, increase comfort, and solve global challenges such as climate change and food shortages. First of all, science has significantly improved healthcare and increased life expectancy. Medical discoveries such as vaccines, antibiotics, and advanced surgical techniques have saved millions of lives around the world. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists developed vaccines in a remarkably short period of time, helping societies return to normal life more quickly. Without scientific research, many diseases that are easily treated today would still be fatal. Therefore, one of the greatest achievements of science is undoubtedly its contribution to human health and well-being. In addition, scientific developments have made everyday life more convenient and efficient. Technological innovations such as smartphones, the internet, and modern transportation systems allow people to communicate, work, and travel more easily than ever before. In education, for instance, students can now access online courses and digital libraries from anywhere in the world. Personally, I have benefited from technology in my own studies because online platforms help me improve my English skills and prepare for important exams like IELTS. Furthermore, science should also focus on solving global problems that threaten humanity. Environmental issues such as global warming, pollution, and the shortage of natural resources require scientific solutions. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind power are excellent examples of how science can improve people’s lives while protecting the planet for future generations. If scientists prioritize human welfare, societies will become more sustainable and stable in the long term. In conclusion, I firmly believe that the most important goal of science should be to improve people’s lives. Through advancements in medicine, technology, and environmental protection, science continues to make the world safer, healthier, and more comfortable. For this reason, scientific progress should always be directed toward the benefit of humanity.

Band Score 6One of the founding principles in science is for the betterment of mankind. It is the profound interest of science doers to work for the welfare of people's lives. Science is born out of necessity. The earliest form of science was cooking, and it was developed to improve the early humans' survival. It paved the way for agriculture, and today it has ramped up to the advent of artificial intelligence. It is essential to understand, formulate and innovate various aspects of nature. Firstly, the invention of the wheel helped mankind to move from one place to another. Secondly, the invention of the smallpox vaccine revolutionised medicine. Thirdly, the invention of the computer brought about a transformation in the field of technology. Lastly, the ongoing developments of space travel and the promising future of artificial intelligence prove to be a path for a promising future. Science has also led to massive destruction in the past. For instance, the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the world war II.The mass genocide during the reign of the Nazi Party. The industrial revolution, which brought about mass-scale depletion of natural resources, has taken away the golden ethics of science. Today's concern lies in the water resources that face huge risk due to the advent of artificial intelligence and data centres. Although the mistakes made by the past in handling science are evident, I believe that one cannot overlook the promising future of its rewards to mankind. Therefore, it lies in our capacity to utilise the science for the betterment of mankind society as a whole and use the full potential to make earth a better place to live.
